Dr. Paul Rosenthal. Weitere Informationen!

ESF Early-Stage Researcher Group “The Smart Virtual Worker”

The members of the interdisciplinary competence center “Virtual Humans” have successfully applied for an ESF early-stage researcher group. The group consists of eight PhD-students and is entitled “The Smart Virtual Worker”. From 01.01.2012 till 31.12.2014 the members will develop new methods for the simulation of virtual workers and factories to effectively overcome the problems of todays aging mankind. The Visual Computing Group will be represented by Walentin Heft, who will be dealing with world modeling and visualization.

Research Positions at Visual Computing Lab in Chemnitz

There are two full research positions (E 13 TV-L) for three years available at the Visual Computing Laboratory (http://www.tu-chemnitz.de/informatik/vcl/), part of the Department of Computer Science at Chemnitz University of Technology.

The first position should be filled as soon as possible and can be filled by a phd-student or post-doc. The position is integrated into the interdisciplinary competence center “Virtual Humans” (http://www.tu-chemnitz.de/forschung/virtual_humans/). Topics of the research will be the modeling of smart virtual workers and the visualization of multidimensional ergonomic measures related to their work. Applicants have to hold a computer-science related Master or Diploma degree.

The second position suited for a phd-student is part of the interdisciplinary research training group “CrossWorlds – Connecting Virtual and Real Social Worlds” (http://crossworlds.info/) which will start from 01.04.2012 on. Topics of the research will be related to the study of new ways of interaction and communication which are offered by the connection of virtual and real social worlds in comparison with the experience of immediate real interaction and communication. Applicants have to hold a computer-science related Master or Diploma degree.

For more information about the positions contact Paul Rosenthal (http://www.paul-rosenthal.de/?page_id=72). Applications should be preferably sent via email including the usual documents.

Aiming for new directions

With the beginning of October 2010 I have left the Visualization and Computer Graphics Laboratory of Lars Linsen. I am happy to go the next step as assistant professor for “Visual Computing” at Chemnitz University of Technology. My future directions include the building of the new Visual Computing Laboratory and search for new cooperations, especially in the fields of visualization, high-performance computer graphics, and practice-oriented visual computing.

Airline Forum 2010

Last week i had a really nice day at the Airline Forum 2010, which is a conference hosted by Lufthansa Systems. Many impressive new things where presented.

I was invited to give an introductory talk to visualization. These talks I actually like a lot since you can really surprise people with nice and impressive pictures. A very famous picture, surely everybody in visualization community should know is the graph of Minard visualizing the march of Napoleon on Moscow. For me the birth of information visualization.

Minard’s famous graph showing the decreasing size of the Grande Armée as it marches to Moscow.
